Port Harcourt — The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has reported a significant crash in the retail prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, also known as cooking gas, with consumers paying over 22% less to refill cylinders in August 2025 compared to July.
According to the LPG Price Watch released by the bureau, the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas dropped by 22.32%, falling from N8,243.79 in July 2025 to N6,404.02 in August 2025. Year-on-year, however, the price dipped slightly by 0.40%, from N6,430.02 in August 2024.
On the state-by-state breakdown, Katsina recorded the highest average price at N6,945.21, followed by Taraba (N6,893.12) and Rivers (N6,886.49). Delta State recorded the lowest at N5,657.50, with Bauchi (N5,721.75) and Borno (N6,070.56) trailing.
Zonal analysis showed that the North-West had the highest average at N6,473.63, followed closely by the North-East (N6,465.63), while the South-South recorded the lowest average at N6,331.29.
Similarly, the price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas fell by 21.42% month-on-month, dropping from N20,609.48 in July 2025 to N16,195.07 in August 2025. On a year-on-year basis, however, it rose by 4.13%, up from N15,552.56 in August 2024.
By state profile, Yobe recorded the highest average price at N16,887.42, followed by Adamawa (N16,872.40) and Ebonyi (N16,859.17). The lowest prices were seen in Benue (N15,102.50), Borno (N15,176.39) and Imo (N15,177.58).
On zonal distribution, the North-West led with the highest average of N16,358.15, followed by the South-East (N16,344.61), while the South-West recorded the lowest average at N15,865.17.
The latest figures mark one of the steepest month-on-month declines in LPG retail prices in recent years, offering temporary relief to households already struggling with high energy costs.
