POSITION SUMMARY
The Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Engineer Advisor position is based in Houston, Texas and will be part of the Central Wells Team reporting to Wells Assurance Manager. This position will provide global MPD engineering support for Hess’ exploration, appraisal, and production projects. The position requires experience of managed pressure drilling (MPD) and under balance drilling (UBD) with proven knowledge, understanding and practical application of equipment, software, design, planning and operations. Candidates must have experience of project management and new technology development & implementation. Additionally, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of design and planning MPD in high pressure, high temperature (HPHT), deep-water and exploration drilling applications. The successful candidate will be assigned to specific projects and be accountable for the MPD engineering design, planning and execution, they will also provide in-house technical expertise and engineering consultation across the organization on all types of MPD applications. The candidate will be expected to remain at the forefront of new and developing MPD technologies and proactively recommend advancements to improve EHS, performance, and reduce costs. This position will require domestic and international travel.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities and duties:
- Provide technical expertise on all types of MPD systems including Continuous Circulation System, Surface Back Pressure, and Controlled Mud Level.
- Provide engineering consultation across the Wells organization on Managed Pressure Drilling systems and their associated hardware, software, design, planning and operations.
- Stay current with the latest technology developments in MPD. Evaluate the technologies for potential application and assist the operating units with the proper application and evaluation of new technologies.
- Attend and/or participate in various SPE meetings, as well as be active in the API committees.
- When assigned to specific projects:
- Develop high level Project Schedule for MPD wells/ projects jointly with Project Drilling Engineer
- Prepare MPD programs that include transient and steady-state hydraulic simulations related with drilling, influx management, MPD Matrix and envelope, riser gas handling, running drilling pipe and casing/liner, hole cleaning, cementing and well completion processes on managed pressure mode, as well as operating procedures adapted to each specific operation.
- Perform functional specification designs/calculations for surface MPD equipment and integration with rig equipment (frictional pressure losses on surface lines, equipment and accessories, erosion, rig MGS capabilities, etc)
- Maintain MPD action tracker and risk register throughout project; ensure close out of actions by required due date.
- Support Peer Reviews/Assists.
- Support the Project Drilling Engineers with the preparation of regulatory permits.
- Integrate MPD procedures, specifications and parameters into Drilling Programs and Procedures.
- Support Lead Engineer & Drilling Superintendent during well execution by performing required MPD engineering calculations, equipment selection, procedures, investigations, contingency planning, and reporting. Identify planning and operational risks and mitigation controls.
- Ensure MPD lessons learned are captured, shared, and implements across assets and projects.
- Follow up on MPD operations across the organization and provide remote support when MPD well-engineering requirements are needed.
- Organize, facilitate, and participate in MPD HAZAN workshops (HazOp, HazID, FMEA etc.)
- Attend and support technical meetings, risk assessments, hazards identification analysis, hazard and operability studies, drilling well on paper, etc.
- Review and approve rig visit/inspections (onshore/offshore) reports for MPD equipment installation and related flow process diagram and P&ID.
- Perform MPD job audits and keep track of operations results.
- Provide technical and commercial input into ITT’s and Tender Evaluations, and contractor management Ensure equipment deliveries are being tracked against agreed schedule.
- Organize MPD mentoring and training for well engineers, and track MPD competencies.
- Maintain a good understanding of the regulatory environment and monitor and communicate changes in requirements.
- Liaise with equipment OEMs to ensure latest policies and procedures are adhered to.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Experience must include all the following:
- Over 10 years of Deepwater Managed Pressure Drilling Engineering experience of which at least 5 years should be in the Gulf of Mexico.
- Project Management and the planning and implementation of new technology
- Complex Deepwater GOM Exploration
- High Temperature High Pressure
- Deepwater Managed Pressure Cementing – Design, Planning & Execution
- Preparation of BSEE New Technology Plans – MPD & MPC
- Preparation of BSEE Application for Permits to Drill – MPD & MPC
- SLB, WFT & AFG (NOV) MPD systems
- Single-phase/multi-phase hydraulic transient and steady-state simulators, Wellflo, Drillbench & Safe-Kick.
- Well control engineering and use of influx management simulators.
- Facilitation of MPD HAZAN workshops, including HazOp, HazID and FMEA
- Preparation of MPD drilling programs
- Surface MPD/RCD – Tension Leg Platform (TLP) or Jackup
- Pressurized Mud Cap Drilling
- Floating Mud Cap Drilling
- Under-balanced Drilling
- Two-phased Drilling
Education, Training & Certifications:
Master’s Degree in Engineering and 10 years of experience in the job offered or in a related job or a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 15 years of experience in the job offered or in a related job.
- Combined Surface and Subsea, Level 4 Well Control
- Some general non-MPD well engineering training would be preferred.
