The Hess Process Safety Advisor will provide technical and process safety expertise and leadership for Hess Corporation. Facilitate the development and implementation of fit-for-purpose standards, procedures, and associated processes, utilizing a risk-based approach. Provides subject matter expertise in the understanding, assessment, and management of processes to reduce risk and foster the prevention of major accident events. Investigate process safety incidents and ensure sustainable preventative actions are identified and implemented. This key role will be mainly office based but will require the ability travel to Hess assets.





  • Will act as the technical and process safety technical authority (TA-2) for Hess Corporation portfolio (onshore, offshore, upstream, midstream, U.S. and international).
  • Develop, implement, and update technical and process safety enterprise-level standards and conduct assurance.
  • Review and approve dispensations, if needed, with associated risk assessments to corporate standards and/or industry codes.
  • Represent Hess Corporation externally with partnership/membership organizations on relevant topics and interface internally with operations and engineering personnel, leadership teams, EHS and internal regulatory teams.
  • Participate in reviews and make decisions for external standard adoptions, risk-based approaches to integrity inspections, safeguards, automation and control philosophy.
  • Facilitate, organize, lead, review, approve, and assure Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP), Hazard Identification studies (HAZID) Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) sessions, Bow-Tie, and Pre-Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSR), and other related technical Safety Studies specific to Gas Processing, Onshore and Offshore Production, Enhanced Oil Recovery, Oil and Hazardous Liquids Storage and Transportation (Rail and Pipeline), Drilling & Completions and Project operations to ensure they address appropriate areas of Process Safety.
  • Provide technical/process safety expertise and lead and approve, as needed, Risk Management Plans, Management of Change (MOC) process, Safety System Bypass process, Pre-Start-Up Safety Reviews (PSSR), non-routine and project activities, process safety related incident investigations and cause failure analysis.
  • Develop and monitor process safety and related performance metrics.
  • Work with teams to track process safety related audit and general action items from PHAs, MOCs, and RCAs to ensure timely closure of open items.
  • Develop, support, train and coach personnel within operations, and engineering on Hess process safety requirements and risk assessment activities.





  • 10+ years technical / process safety experience in upstream, midstream, OSHA PSM and regulated offshore process safety management system.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, with good interpersonal, influencing and stakeholder management skills for broad and diverse workforce – executive management, various discipline engineers, onshore, offshore workforce.
  • Leadership ability to analyze risks to make data informed and competent decisions that adequately mitigate risks and obtainable at the speed of the operation (balance of theory, preference, pragmatic and practical).
  • Ability to facilitate work processes and problem solve in which various opinions, perspectives, and theories are represented and build consensus in a collaborative manner.
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant oil and gas industry codes, standards and regulations associated with process operations and safety engineering.
  • Experience technical safety hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies including awareness and interpretation of quantitative risk assessments.
  • Proven ability to prepare, lead and facilitate technical/process safety engineering workshops such as HAZOP, HAZID, Bow-Ties and SIMOPS.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of regulations, API standards, and other industry standards for onshore and offshore assets (i.e. API-14C pertinent to offshore oil & gas production facilities)
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills, including oral and written presentation and communication to both internal and external audiences.
  • Self-starter who works proactively and is able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously to completion.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Powerpoint and other software applications.


Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or relevant technical discipline.
  • Relevant technical and/or process safety training qualifications.
