Job Role Summary


The Category Manager for Industrial Packaging is responsible for driving value, efficiency and expanded market advantage via end-to-end (purchase to pay) from strategy to implementation while ensuring operational integrity and people development within the global category. This particular role oversees the Industrial Packaging contract portfolio for Downstream and Chemicals applications which includes but is not limited to: 

  • Cardboard Boxes – Corrugated; Octa Cartons; Sample Boxes; Caps; Inner Cells; Slip Sheets; Liners
  • Crates and Pallets – Metal, Wood, Plastic
  • Containers – Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC), ISO Containers, Bulk Liquid Containers (BLC), Flexitank, Flexibag, Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) 
  • Plastic Bags – Form Fill Seal  (FFS)
  • Plastic Films/Hoods/Wraps – Shrink Hood; Stretch Wrap; Pads; Stretch Hood; etc.
  • Other Packaging – Dunnage Materials; Strapping; Cans; Tape; Labels; Glue; Cleaners; etc.

Job Role Responsibilities


  • Develops, implements and owns category specific strategies and commercial guidance to deliver business value
  • Leverage and share market intelligence to enhance effectiveness of commercial decisions 
  • Develop Category total system cost models to support commercial activity
  • Utilize Opportunity Identification processes to fill value pipeline
  • Identify business value and contract rationalization opportunities within the portfolio 
  • Lead supplier relationship management with key strategic suppliers
  • Ensure strategy penetration into contracts and bids by advising and mentoring contract owners 
  • Supports contract development (standardized templates, scopes of work, compensation, bid evaluations, etc.), ensuring transactional efficiency
  • Creates and maintains category planning sites and tools to drive value for category
  • Establishes and deploys category training plans
  • Executes Procurement processes in full compliance with ExxonMobil controls culture
  • Participates in Procurement category and business line technical networks

Job Requirements


  • BS in Engineering, Supply Chain, or other applicable business degree; MBA or SC Masters desired.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in Supply Chain contracting or operations with a focus on Industrial Packaging or similar Category type –  Industrial Packaging (preferred)
  • Demonstrated analytical, leadership, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Understanding of key market players / dynamics of domestic and international logistics
  • A minimum of 5 years demonstrated negotiation success (including contract terms & conditions)
  • Experience developing strategies and leading relevant Supplier Relationship Management programs
  • Demonstrated ability to lead virtual team projects or initiatives and global networks / international business experience

  • Strong leadership skills; ability to lead virtual teams
  • Facilitation skills; ability to manage virtual business networks
  • Strong communication skills, including developing and delivering presentations to senior level management
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; understanding of total system cost concepts (TSC) and ability to derive TSC models
  • Project planning / execution skills
  • Drive continuous improvement / innovation
  • Effective negotiation, advocacy and influencing skills
  • Knowledge of purchase to pay processes (Buying, Contracting, Payables)
