Job Description:

Our client is seeking a dedicated and experienced Chief Safety Officer to lead safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) initiatives within an open cast mining operation. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while driving a strong safety culture and continuous improvement in operational safety performance. This role requires a proactive and results-driven professional capable of implementing safety management systems, leading risk management initiatives, and overseeing safety audits to ensure adherence to industry best practices and legal standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement, monitor, and maintain SHEQ and wellness standards across the mining operation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement risk management processes and compliance controls.
  • Coordinate and participate in internal and external safety audits.
  • Fulfil the legal responsibilities associated with the Chief Safety Officer role.
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance through training, awareness, and behavioural safety programmes.
  • Compile and submit regular safety and compliance reports to management.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of ISO-aligned management systems.
  • Lead safety initiatives across both mining and plant environments.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Formal qualification in Safety, Health, Environmental Management or related discipline.
  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in an open cast mining and plant environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mining safety regulations and SHEQ management systems.
  • Blasting ticket advantageous.
  • Valid South African driver’s licence.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office and reporting tools).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to drive behavioural safety programmes and lead teams effectively.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven, and capable of operating in demanding mining environments.
