Our greatest asset has been, and will continue to be, our people. We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Automation Engineer within our US Onshore Resources & Carbon Management Business Unit based in the Houston, Texas.


The Automation Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and execution of automation engineering activities in Oil and Gas facilities projects. This role will also be accountable for the successful development and execution of automation projects to support the efficient production of oil and gas, following company and industry standards.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development & implementation of automation strategies for upgrade, expansion, continuous improvement, life cycle, and preventive maintenance of OXY automation infrastructure 

  • Generate all automation engineering project documentation and delivery to Facilities project manager on time and ensure construction is built as designed. 

  • Maintain project schedule, implementation, compliance to design and commissioning.  

  • Generate project tracking and reporting as defined by project team.  

  • Spearhead the design of PLC programs and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for wells and facilities within guidelines of OXY automation standards  

  • Familiarize Junior Team members with  Oil and Gas facilities’ process and design control systems in accordance with OXY and Industry standards. 

  • Communicate with external and internal stakeholders as needed. 

  • Enforce change control processes (MOCs) while working on Maintenance Capital Projects (M&C) and OPEX projects and monitor compliance and close outs via regular auditing activities.  

  • Ensure all data is accurate and complete for all visual representation of automation projects  

  • Mentor field personnel in identifying and resolving Process Control, Control Network, and Instrumentation problems. 

  • Initiate and Drive Pilot projects for to evaluate new Oil and Gas production/automation technologies. 

  • Collaborate with IT and Central Automation Group to create and maintain automation standards  

  • Provide training and knowledge sharing to Instrument techs and other automation support personnel. 

  • Participate as team advisor or SME on automation projects to provide guidance and insight.  

  • Makes recommendations on improvements, best practices, maintenance and standardization of PLC and Operator interface systems. 




  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related degree 

  • 10+ years working experience on Automation related projects  

  • Knowledge of oil and gas production processes  

  • Knowledge of RTUs. and PLCs. Understanding of digital and analog I/O, programming, and troubleshooting. 

  • Strong knowledge of automation and electrical design principles and industry standards. 

  • Understanding of Pre-Start Safety Review process (PSSR)s and Management of Change (MOCs). 

  • Strong Leadership and Mentoring skills  

  • Ability to perform under pressure and work multiple projects concurrently 

  • Ability to develop technical and economic recommendations with incomplete information 

  • Strong written, oral and project management skills 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 

  • Demonstrate ability to perform strong time management skills  

  • Ability to interact with customers and clients in a positive and professional manner 

  • Team player with strong interpersonal and leadership skills 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, technical and field personnel 

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and Windows Operating Systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with GPA of 3.25 or higher (or foreign equivalent). 

  • 7+ years of Oil Field experience. 

  • 5+ years of upstream oil and gas automation experience. 

  • Professional Engineer License  

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs & Rosemount instrumentation.  

  • Able to develop Cause & Effects, P&ID’s, wiring diagrams, control narratives, etc.  

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with management, technical, and field personnel. 

  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals. 

  • Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results.
