Job Description:

The Head of Credit is a Senior-Level position responsible for overseeing and managing the Credit Operations. This role involves developing and implementing credit policies, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and managing the overall credit risk of the company.  Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for shaping the credit strategy to support the company’s strategic goals while maintaining a balanced and healthy credit portfolio.



Credit Policy Development:

  • Credit Quality: Monitoring the overall quality of the credit portfolio, Measured by key metrics such as default rates, delinquency rates, and non-performing loan ratios.
  • Portfolio Growth: Assessing the growth of the credit portfolio while maintaining a healthy balance between risk and return.

Credit Risk Management:

  • Analyze and assess credit risk associated with different microfinance products.
  • Tracking the effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies and evaluating the impact on reducing credit losses.
  • Evaluating the returns generated by the credit portfolio in relation to the level of risk taken.

Credit Underwriting:

  • Approval rate: Monitoring the percentage of loan applications approved, ensuring alignment with credit policies and risk tolerance.
  • Time to decision: Measuring the efficiency of the credit underwriting process by tracking the time taken to make credit decisions.
  • Management of policy dispensations and waivers in conjunction with in-country Credit Committee and Group.

Portfolio Management:

  • Monitor and analyze the performance of the loan portfolio.
  • Industry and Sector exposure: Assessing the distribution of credit exposures across different industries and sectors to ensure a diversified and balanced portfolio.
  • Geographic diversification: Monitoring the geographic distribution of credit exposures to minimize regional concentration risk
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure the alignment of credit operations with overall organizational objectives.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensuring adherence to relevant laws and regulations, with KPIs related to the number of compliance issues, audits, and corrective actions taken.
  • Stay informed about relevant regulatory changes and ensure the organization’s credit operations comply with legal requirements.
  • Policy Adherence: Monitoring compliance with internal credit policies and procedures

Team Management:

  • Counsel, motivate and create a good working environment for all staff to enhance individual performance and productivity including an effective performance appraisal

  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to direct reports and members of the operation team by observing their daily activities and assisting them with complicated issues.


Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field; advanced degree (Master’s or MBA added advantage)
  • Credit Risk Certified (CRC), or other relevant credit certifications added advantage.
  • A master’s degree – added advantage.
  • Experience in credit management, with a proven track record of progressively increasing responsibilities. Previous experience in a leadership role is highly desirable (Credit Analyst, Credit Manager).
  • Excellent knowledge of International Accounting and Audit Standards, and Legislations.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a supervisory or managerial role within credit operations, is essential.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance standards is also crucial.
  • Analytical and practical understanding of workflow, capacity planning / optimization.
  • High level of drive and energy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Credit and Financial analysis; review of restructuring/credit/debt settlement proposals for management/Board approval.
  • Work closely with relationship managers to understand customer needs, address credit-related concerns, and ensure effective communication between credit analysis and customer-facing teams.
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing and developing high-performance teams.
  • Strong understanding of financial analysis, risk assessment, and credit modeling
  • Credit risk management: experience in credit risk assessment and provision of practical mitigations to prevent any probable credit losses.
  • Loan portfolio management: closely supervising loan portfolios to ensure compliances to the terms and conditions of the loan contracts.
  • Knowledge and effective application of all relevant banking policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Negotiation skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
