Job Description:

Our client, a founder-led African investment holding group with interests across the mining and industrial sectors, is seeking a Mining Operations Specialist based at its head office in Johannesburg. This is a hands-on, boots-on-the-ground role. The successful candidate will bring a strong operational mining background and work closely with the group’s finance and technical investment team, translating what happens on site into the numbers, models and decisions made at head office.

Responsibilities:

• Spend significant time on site at portfolio and target operations, assessing performance across mining, processing, maintenance and logistics.
• Carry out operational and technical due diligence on new mining investments and acquisitions, identifying risks, opportunities and realistic production potential.
• Translate operational realities into practical inputs for financial models, valuations, business cases and mine plans, working closely with the finance and technical team.
• Identify and drive operational improvements at portfolio operations, including production ramp-ups, cost reduction and efficiency gains.
• Engage with mine management, contractors and site teams, and track operational KPIs, budgets and delivery against plan.
• Provide practical, on-the-ground input into deal structuring, operational planning and investment decisions.
• Promote safety, health, environmental and regulatory compliance at all operations supported.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

• Degree in Mining Engineering or a related technical field. A Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency is advantageous.
• Minimum 8 years’ hands-on experience in mining operations, such as production, mine planning, engineering or site management.
• Strong practical understanding of how a mine runs, from mining and processing through to logistics and market.
• Ability to translate operational data into commercial and financial terms, with working knowledge of mine planning, budgeting and financial models.
• Experience across different commodities and African operations advantageous.
• A practical, hands-on operator rather than a pure strategist or advisor, comfortable splitting time between site and head office.
• Willingness to travel extensively to operations in South Africa and across Africa. Valid driver’s licence.
