Job Description:

Our client, a leading underground mining contractor operating in Zambia, is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to lead, plan, and control all underground mining activities. The role ensures full delivery of contractual commitments to the client while meeting targets for safety, production, cost control, quality, and sustainable operational performance

Responsibilities:

1. Operational Management

  • Lead and supervise all underground mining activities, including development, preparation, stoping, ground support, ventilation, and mine services.
  • Ensure achievement of the mining plan and key performance indicators (production, development meters, costs, and equipment availability).
  • Oversee efficient allocation of personnel, equipment, and materials.

2. Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE)

  • Ensure full compliance with mining, environmental, and safety regulations.
  • Strengthen SHE management systems, risk controls, and critical control monitoring.
  • Keep the operational team updated on regulatory changes and SHE requirements.

3. People Management

  • Maximize workforce productivity across underground operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team with a focus on discipline, skills development, and talent retention.
  • Manage employee performance and implement improvement or development plans.

4. Contract Management & Client Relations

  • Ensure strict compliance with contractual deliverables for the client mining company.
  • Maintain continuous communication with client supervisors to align operational progress and resolve performance gaps.
  • Participate in client-facing coordination meetings and the preparation of management reports.

5. Financial & Administrative Management

  • Control operating costs and propose operational optimization initiatives.
  • Prepare and present operational performance reports, KPIs, and financial indicators.
  • Contribute to budget planning and assess investment proposals for equipment and technology.

 

 

 

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Mining Engineering degree (licensed and registered).
  • MBA or postgraduate specialization in Operations Management (advantageous).
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in underground mining.
  • At least 5 years in senior supervisory/management roles with mining contractors.
  • Underground operations planning & control.
  • Proficiency in mining software (Deswik, AutoCAD, SAP, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of mining legislation, safety, and environmental regulations.
