The Shell Energy Europe & Environmental (SE-EE) Power portfolio encompass’ flexible renewable generation, utilities, aggregators, power generators, large industrial and commercial energy users, and trading houses throughout numerous European countries (UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy).
The Power Operator will report directly to the Power and Renewable Gas Team Lead.
What’s the role?
Maintain a thorough understanding of SEEL’s Commercial business needs across the geographical portfolio, and how Commercial Power Operations captures value in commercial markets.
Daily scheduling of European Power Grids and Shell’s nominations
Executing trades bilaterally and on Europe’s power Exchange
Management of day ahead and intra-day cross-border capacities
Nominating/dispatching generating assets.
Contact counterparties daily to check power positions and trades and ensure efficient matching.
Provide input to IT tool enhancements/requirements.
Maintain a thorough understanding of SEEL’s purchase and supply contracts and the obligations therein ensuring SEEL’s compliance.
Maintain a thorough understanding of the various Power markets and regulatory regimes across Europe, where SEEL operate.
Lead the Commercial Wholesale Operations team through the digitalisation journey, removing unnecessary process’s and looking to automate where possible.
Develop cross team capabilities in Gas, Power and renewables, and leverage synergies to the gain of all areas of the team.
Work as part of the weekend rota (typically 1 weekend in 6)
Dimensions
SE-EE transports and sells ~130bcm annually across Europe, with some 2,000 trades scheduled per day across the region, relating to a portfolio of approximately 200 counterparties. SE-EE currently operates across 17 countries requiring management of some 20 systems including bespoke operational and trading applications.
Special Challenges:
This is an evolving role as part of the expansion of power business within Shell, as such the processes and procedures change rapidly which requires team members to keep appraised on areas that affect their operational activities.
Due to the criticality of the tasks undertaken by the Power operator this role involves working outside of normal working hours (weekends) on a rota basis. The Power Operator will at times be a lone worker and therefore must be comfortable to work without supervision.
What we need from you
Prior experience/knowledge in Power Operations
Self-motivated, with an aptitude for accurate problem solving in a very time critical environment
Proficient English required and at least one further European language desirable (Italian or Spanish preferred)
Very strong attention to detail and delivery focused.
Prior experience working in a trading environment and managing risk
Flexible approach to working hours to accommodate a range of European markets
Very strong commercial judgement, excellent analytical skills and able to make accurate decisions and ability to handle a stressful environment.
Excellent understanding of European Power Operations and Power Assets.
Experienced user of IT systems and knowledgeable on IT landscapes including Power operations platforms.
Ability to work without supervision
Learner mindset continually driven to improve systems and process
