JOB TITLE: PRINCIPAL MECHANICAL ENGINEER (STATIC)

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and develop Senior, Discipline & Graduate Mechanical Engineers in the production, checking and approval of cost-effective mechanical designs which meet project and customer requirements.
  • Executing the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned work scopes using sound engineering principles whilst adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and project requirements.
  • On requirement, acting as Mechanical Engineering team focal point for Mechanical Static and Rotating resources in line with project and business requirements.
  • Mechanical Engineering discipline input into work scope bids and estimates.
  • Development and training of lesser experienced Engineers, including Graduates.
  • Specifying, completing technical evaluations and acceptance testing of mechanical equipment supplied by UK and international manufacturers and modifications to existing equipment or purchasing new equipment including but not limited to Static equipment – pressure vessels, columns, tanks, filters and heat exchangers; Rotating equipment – turbines, compressors, pumps, fans, expanders and blowers; Packaged equipment – power generation, gas dehydration, crude oil treatment, produced water handling and utility systems; Other associated equipment with the wider Energy industry
  • Sound understanding and application of the various Mechanical Engineering legislative requirements including, but not limited to, the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER), Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), EU ATEX and Machinery Directives.
  • Where required by the Lead Mechanical Engineer or HoD for Piping and Mechanical, acts as focal point providing supervision, direction and support to all mechanical resources to ensure that the resourcing requirements across all current and future contracts and projects are fully supported in line with project, client and business needs.
  • Ensures the Mechanical Engineering support provided satisfies the appropriate Asset Safety Case and that the (Prevention of Fire and Explosion, Emergency Response) PFEER performance standards are not compromised by any Mechanical Engineering activity.
  • Closely controls the Management of Change (MoC) process and accurately manages project budget, progress and productivity in line with requirements throughout the lifecycle of any project or work scope.
  • Complies with Petrofac Engineering Procedures as well as industry, international and client codes and standards, and assurance that team members comply with the procedures.
  • Remains up to date and current with technical developments, national and international standards and legislative requirements related to the Mechanical Engineering discipline within the Energy Industry.
  • Actively manages and promotes the training and technical development of lesser experienced and Graduate Engineers.
  • Produces detailed, accurate work scope bids and estimates (man-hours & equipment costs) in line with client and business requirements and direction.
  • Ensures that all Mechanical Engineering work complies fully with project and Petrofac Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) and Quality Assurance (QA) management systems; project specific HSE and quality plans; and agreed interfacing requirements with sub-contractors as appropriate.
  • Responsible for work scope / project discipline budget control for the Mechanical Engineering Discipline on multiple Engineering projects. This includes but is not limited to Accurate work scope estimate / budget development (typically including manhour estimates and equipment costs), Close control of manhour spend versus project progress and productivity, Champions the MoC process.
  • Responsible for ensuring sound engineering solutions are provided to the various technical challenges encountered.
  • Responsible for the Engineering technical approval for all Mechanical Engineering solutions provided. For new, or unfamiliar technologies, this may require ensuring that the relevant level of expertise is sought from elsewhere and closely managed in accordance with Petrofac, client, and industry best practice.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

 

  • Accredited Engineering Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer (or demonstrated to be working towards Chartered status) in line with the IMechE.
  • Proven experience within the Brownfield Oil & Gas Industry is essential.
  • Relevant experience should be in the knowledge and application of Mechanical Engineering principles to engineering projects from conceptual to detailed engineering stages.
  • BOSIET & MIST certification for offshore site visits, as required.
  • Conversant and knowledgeable with respect to current and new engineering legislation and professional standards.
  • Must be willing to travel to off / onshore sites as required and capable of completing technical surveys.
  • Capable of confidently representing Petrofac and Client to business associates in a professional manner.
  • A natural leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Motivated to deliver in a challenging, fast-paced atmosphere; works well under pressure with multiple responsibilities.
  • Effectively prioritises workload, deputising whenever necessary, to ensure all responsibilities and commitments are met in accordance with project planning and agreed milestones.
  • Ability to be responsive and open to changing circumstances; champions project or engineering change.
  • Actively participates in the continual training and development of lesser experienced / Graduate Engineers.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office Applications and relevant discipline specific software.
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural awareness and an ability to build effective working relationships across our global business.
