Job Description:
Our client, a leading primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) with integrated mining, smelting, and refining operations, is seeking an experienced Process General Manager for Refining to provide effective leadership and management of the refining operation, ensuring optimal, safe, and sustainable performance aligned to company strategy. Reporting to the Executive Head of Processing, you will lead a multidisciplinary team across production, engineering, technical, laboratory, metal control, commercial, SHE, and support functions.
Responsibilities:
- Create and sustain a strong safety culture by implementing operational systems and risk-controlled environments that protect all employees and contracting partners. Oversee consistent application of Safety and Health principles across all discipline interactions, and take personal responsibility for zero harm and the elimination of fatalities. Design and approve operational risk management systems, ensure critical controls are embedded in daily work practices, and conduct regular physical safety checks and coaching interventions.
- Deliver the operation’s annual budget and 5-year plan within the context of the strategic plan, ensuring adherence to all safety, financial, quality, physical, and time parameters. Lead operational planning and actively participate in the development of the Business Strategy, driving continuous performance improvement and productivity initiatives.
- Improve and sustain the efficiency and effectiveness of operational assets through cost savings initiatives, business improvement projects, and processing modernisation programmes. Develop, maintain, and continually improve systems for planning, control, and response to variation, ensuring stable and capable organisational performance. Ensure environmental performance meets applicable energy, water, and emission targets and regulations.
- Support delivery of relevant sustainability activities as set out in the Sustainable Mine Plan. Drive cross-functional integration on sustainability matters and build strong relationships with key stakeholders at business and operational levels, including government, communities, and other relevant industry players.
- Implement a purpose-driven, high-performing culture aligned with company values that promotes diversity and inclusion, supports employee engagement, and fosters continuous improvement to work processes. Lead direct reports including Managers of Production, Engineering, Technical, Laboratory, Metal Control, Commercial, SHE, P&O, IP & BI, and Protection Services.
- Ensure full compliance with internal and external regulatory, legislative, and permitting requirements. Develop the required compliance governance framework at a business level within the refining discipline, and maintain certification as a legally appointed manager.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy OR Chemistry. A business-related qualification is advantageous.
- Minimum of 10–15 years’ working experience in PGM and Base Metals Refining, of which at least 5 years should be in a production management capacity.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge including understanding of commercial and business drivers within the discipline, safety, health and environmental legislative requirements, value chain management, and interdependencies across value chain steps. Project management experience and prior exposure to communities, government, and industry players is required.
- Advanced proficiency in applying business process improvement techniques, practical application (workflows, configurations, routines), and interpretation of benchmarks to develop targeted operational improvement plans. Proficient in commercial and business principles, data analysis and management, computer literacy, SAP process control, and Business systems.
- Strong leadership capability with well-developed self-awareness and interpersonal skills that drive high team performance and effective collaboration. Demonstrates drive, determination, persistence, and commitment to applying all elements of capability in the role. Integration level of work – ability to integrate and manage interactions between multiple systems and identify first-order consequences.
- Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s licence required. Medical certificate of fitness required. Willingness to travel on an ad hoc basis as required.
