Job Description:
Our client is is seeking an experienced Senior Commodity Trader with a background in coal, anthracite or bulk commodities to join their team based out of Gauteng, South Africa.
You will be responsible for managing end-to-end trading activities, building commercial relationships across global markets, and executing profitable trades aligned with the company’s strategy. You will monitor market trends, negotiate deals, manage risk, and collaborate with logistics and finance teams to ensure seamless execution.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain a strong network of suppliers, producers, brokers, and customers across local and international markets.
- Execute physical and/or derivatives trades within assigned commodity portfolios.
- Analyse market trends, pricing dynamics, supply–demand conditions, and macroeconomic factors.
- Develop and implement trading strategies to maximise commercial value.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing structures, and delivery terms.
- Work closely with logistics teams to ensure efficient supply-chain coordination.
- Monitor positions, exposures, and risk metrics in line with internal risk frameworks.
- Prepare trading reports, forecasts, and performance analytics for management.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Mining Engineering or a similar field.
- 10+ years previous experience in coal, anthracite or bulk commodities trading.
- Demonstrated success operating within global trade and export environments.
- In‑depth knowledge of the regional mining sector and associated logistics landscape.
- Proven track record of profitable trading performance.
- Excellent negotiation, relationship‑building, and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage risk, and make time‑critical decisions.
- Advanced analytical ability and high commercial acumen.
- Business travel as required.
- This role is only open to applicants currently based in South Africa.
