Senior Safety Engineer – Permitting & Environmental

The Role

As a Senior Safety Engineer you will play a pivotal role in integrating regulatory and environmental considerations into engineering design from the earliest project stages.

This position sits at the intersection of engineering and compliance, ensuring that permitting requirements are embedded proactively, minimising risk, avoiding delays, and enabling efficient project execution.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead regulatory compliance, permitting, and environmental activities across multidisciplinary projects.
  • Integrate permitting requirements into concept, FEED, and detailed design phases.
  • Manage Dutch environmental permitting processes, including engagement with regulatory authorities.
  • Act as the key interface between engineering teams, clients, and governing bodies.
  • Identify and mitigate permitting risks early with practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Manage scope, schedules, and budgets within your discipline.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement through innovative tools and digital solutions.

Provide subject matter expertise on:

  • Environmental regulations and compliance.
  • Emissions (air, soil, water).
  • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
  • BAT/BREF frameworks.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or similar.
  • Proven experience in permitting, regulatory compliance, or safety engineering within industrial or petrochemical environments.

Strong knowledge of:

  • Dutch permitting frameworks (e.g. Omgevingswet, Activiteitenbesluit).
  • PGS guidelines and environmental legislation.
  • EIA processes and environmental assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating regulatory requirements into engineering design.
  • Strong communication skills in Dutch and English.
  • Ability to work both independently and within international, multidisciplinary teams.
