Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. Across New Mexico and Texas, the company holds conventional positions in the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform, and an unconventional position in the Delaware Basin. Permian saw significant growth in 2021 with the acquisition of Concho Resources Inc. in January 2021 and the addition of Shell’s Permian acreage in December 2021. At year-end, the company held approximately 1.5 million net acres in the Permian Basin.

Net production for the Permian in 2022 was 461 MBOED.

Description

The Delaware Basin East Asset Team is seeking a Senior or Staff Geologist who will report to the Geoscience Supervisor and be an integral part of the Asset Team. The Senior/Staff Geologist will be responsible for area mapping and characterization work in addition to well planning and execution, in roughly a 50/50 split.

If you are selected for this position, you will be supported by a highly qualified group of geoscience professionals, including other geoscientists and geoscience technicians, as well as geophysicists and petrophysicists on the Delaware Basin Reservoir Characterization teams.

You may be eligible for the voluntary hybrid office work (HOW) program that is designed to provide employees with flexibility while maintaining the advantages of in-person engagement.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Leading well planning, execution and post-well evaluations in assigned areas through collaboration within a multi-discipline team that includes Land, Drilling, Completions, Regulatory, Surface Land, Operations Geology, and Facilities to deliver the rig program
  • Geotechnical aspects of authority for expenditure (AFE) and well justification processes, along with permitting and regulatory issues associated with drilling wells in Lea County New Mexico
  • Maintaining and optimizing long term plan of development to improve value, including identifying Land/BD opportunities
  • Performing geologic analysis including mapping key horizons, fault interpretation, log correlations, formation top prediction, identifying drilling hazards, and operational geology, as needed
  • Providing support to continuous improvement efforts in both the execution and planning phases of the business plan
  • Leading and/or supporting additional projects such as A&D efforts, competitor analysis and special technical studies, as vital
  • Mentoring less experienced staff including interns and new hires

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Master’s degree or higher in Geoscience, Geophysics, or Geology or foreign equivalent
  • 5+ years of geoscience experience in the oil and gas industry

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of experience with well operations
  • 1+ years of experience with planning, executing, and geosteering horizontal wells
  • 1+ years of experience in unconventional resource plays
  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right
  • Delivers positive results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
  • Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
