Delaware Basin Overview

Spanning West Texas through Southeast New Mexico, ConocoPhillips holds approximately 709,000 total net acres in the Delaware Basin, which includes approximately 699,000 unconventional net acres. ConocoPhillips began exploring and appraising the basin’s stacked pay potential in 2012 and has gained extensive technical expertise to optimize development. Entering 2023, the company now operates over 2,800 wells throughout the Basin.

In 2022, the company operated an average of 10 drilling rigs, including one electric rig, and 153 new operated wells were brought online. Net production in 2022 averaged 321 MBOED.

Description

The Geoscience team is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual for the position of Senior or Staff Petrophysicist. If selected, you will primarily support ConocoPhillips’ Delaware Basin Assets, and will be expected to work as part of a cohesive functional team with the other Permian petrophysicists and the rest of the Geoscience team.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Set a visible example of Safety Leadership Behaviors
  • Actively participate in a multi-disciplinary team that undertakes subsurface technical evaluations to resolve potential in our unconventional Delaware Basin assets
  • Provide landing target guidance and selection
  • Maintain and update the Delaware Basin petrophysical model, integrating and reconciling existing and future data from all subsurface disciplines
  • Develop and lead data acquisition plans for wells to be drilled, along with managing the log and core database
  • Liaise with core analysis companies and in-house experts, to verify that core procedures and laboratory analyses are being executed in accordance with ConocoPhillips’ standards and recommended practices, and are completed on time, within budget, and with the highest levels of accuracy and control
  • Display strong organizational and communication skills, making evaluations, interpretations, and assessments available for integration by all Asset and Reservoir Characterization team members
  • Spearhead Knowledge Sharing with the Reservoir Characterization team, Asset teams, Global Unconventional team, and other BUs with unconventional resources to efficiently transfer information and learning as the program matures

Basic/Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Petrophysics, Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, or Physics or foreign equivalent
  • 10+ years of experience in logging technology, including log acquisition, processing, and interpretation
  • 10+ years of experience with Techlog, Interactive Petrophysics, Geolog or equivalent petrophysical interpretation software package(s)
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodations) to travel up to 10% of the time on a yearly basis

Preferred:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Master’s degree, PhD or equivalent in Petrophysics, Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, or Physics
  • Recent and broad experience with evaluation of unconventional reservoirs
  • 15+ years of experience in logging technology, including log acquisition, processing, and interpretation
  • 15+ years of experience with Techlog, Interactive Petrophysics, Geolog or equivalent petrophysical interpretation software package(s)
  • Proficient in Interactive Petrophysics and Transform
  • Candidate must be self-starter with ability to perform with limited supervision and guidance, displaying innovative approaches to the selection of tools and methodology to effectively characterize reservoir potential
  • Listens actively and invites new ideas for shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
  • Consistently demonstrates high level of integrity, behaves ethically, and follows through on commitments
  • Ability to lead and work within a multi-disciplinary technical team
  • Strong integration skills with other subsurface disciplines and subject areas
  • Well Operations experience
  • Proficient in deterministic and probabilistic petrophysical analyses to establish lithology, porosity, permeability and saturation models and their appropriate application to subsurface data
  • Proficiency in core analyses and core-log integration for reservoir properties
  • Understands how key financial and quantitative indicators impact the business
  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right
  • Delivers positive results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
  • Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
