Job Description:

Our client, a leading global mining with operations in DRC,  is looking for a Senior Superintendent: Operational Risk Control that ensures operational resilience and prevent high-consequence events that could halt production, endanger lives, or create existential business risk. The incumbent is accountable for shifting the culture from reactive to predictive risk management and drives the organization’s early warning system and crisis prevention function.

 

Responsibilities:

Operational Risk Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and implement a sustainable Operational Risk Strategy, embed integrated governance and critical control frameworks, and structure the function to enable measurable risk management and business performance.

Risk Intelligence, Controls & Assurance

  • Operationalize real-time risk monitoring, define trigger points and escalation, conduct deep-dive root cause   analysis, and assure effectiveness of critical controls across high-consequence risk areas.

Crisis Preparedness & Business Continuity

  • Develop and stress-test scenario-based response plans, build simulation-driven readiness, embed independent assurance mechanisms, and ensure resilience and rapid recovery from disruptions.

Risk Culture, Warning Signs & Decision Authority

  • Shape strong risk culture and transparent reporting, define explicit warning signs and stop-work triggers, enforce independent reviews and escalation, and mandate action where risk exceeds tolerance.

Stakeholder Value, People & Culture

  • Promote alignment and service excellence across stakeholders, build long-term relationships and knowledge sharing, and lead a capable, high-performing, inclusive team through coaching, performance management, and capability development.

Financial Governance & Operational Discipline

  • Draw up and manage the approved budget aligned to tactical delivery, ensure financial integrity through governance and compliance, track performance metrics, and manage supplier contracts, reporting, and cost control.

Transformation & HSEQ

  • Support transformation (people, automation/digitization, sustainability), implement the business Transformation plan, create an inclusive culture, and ensure HSEQ standards by implementing the HSEQ plan, enforcing safe practices, complying with safety principles, and reporting incidents immediately.

Reporting, Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Implement and monitor reporting systems and dashboards, ensure accurate and timely reporting, establish bestpractice governance, maintain risk/quality/compliance frameworks, adhere to standards and legislation, and verify security activities to entrench Integrity, Honesty and Discipline.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Must hold an Engineering degree (Mining, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering preferred).
  • Must hold a recognized in risk management certification (e.g., CMIIA, CRMA, or similar international credential.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Risk Management, Safety Management, or MBA with risk specialization, is preferred.
  • You must have at least 15- 20 years’ experience working in a mining environment.
  • Must have at least 10 years’ operational background experience.
  • Must have at least 5- 8 years Risk/Assurance Leadership with demonstrated experience building risk frameworks in mining or heavy industry.
  • Must have at least 8 years Substantial African mining experience (like the DRC environment) and proven ability to operate in challenging regulatory and infrastructure environments.
  • Must have experience   navigating complex stakeholder landscapes – government relations, community engagement, security consideration.
