Sr Accountant – Technical Accounting and Policy Job

Job Overview:

This position will be primarily responsible for (1) providing accounting advice to organizations throughout the Company related to the appropriate and consistent application of U.S. GAAP & SEC rules, (2) leading/assisting with understanding, reviewing and the implementation of new accounting standards and the development and maintenance of accounting policies, and (3) maintenance of internal accounting policies. This position requires proficient knowledge of GAAP & SEC rules and regulations, including industry-specific guidance.  Commensurate with accounting knowledge, this position will also be required to develop an understanding of specific transactions, research appropriate authoritative guidance, formulate accounting conclusions, communicate those conclusions to the applicable accounting organization, management and the external auditors, & formally document the accounting conclusion.  The candidate must be able to lead cross-functional teams in a self-directed manner, for both standard implementation and transaction review, manage projects, & meet critical deadlines.  This position will also train and mentor less experienced team members within the F&A organization. 


Job Requirements:

Degree:  Bachelors required

Certification:  CPA required

Major Discipline:   Accounting

Computer Proficiencies:      MS Office Suite required (SAP experience preferred)

Other:   Strong written, verbal and presentation skills

Work Experience:    In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP & SEC rules/regulations; Experience with technical accounting research and application of U.S. GAAP to complex transactions; 10+ years with O&G experience; Big 4 preferred.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Advise accounting organizations throughout the Company regarding the appropriate and consistent application of U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations
  • Research U.S. GAAP requirements for complex business transactions 
  • Represent Accounting organization on cross-functional teams
  • Lead/assist accounting standard project implementation teams (includes non-Accounting organizations)
  • Become recognized internal subject matter expert on oil & gas accounting and SEC regulations
  • Communicate accounting conclusions to accountants, management and external auditors, as appropriate
  • Formally document business issues, authoritative accounting guidance and accounting conclusions
  • Develop and deliver training programs/tool sets for F&A personnel to stay abreast of new and developing accounting standards
  • Participate in the standards-setting process in coordination with industry peers and through drafting of feedback on proposals
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of accounting policies
  • Assist in the review processes of Company’s SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, etc.)
  • Lead or assist special projects, as necessary
