POSITION SUMMARY

Hess is seeking an experienced appraisal and development geologist with reservoir modelling expertise to join its Houston-based, non-Operated, Guyana Appraisal and Pre-Developments Subsurface team, reporting to the Geoscience Appraisal Manager.  The successful candidate will become a pivotal member of an integrated, multi-disciplinary, subsurface team whose responsibilities include seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization, reservoir modeling, and field development planning for future development projects.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Monitoring and reporting of ongoing appraisal well operations. Activities will include picking formation tops, making well correlation panels, making initial geological interpretations of incoming data, including well logs, cores, formation pressures, and dynamic test data. Reviewing future well plans and making recommendations accordingly.
  • Produce semi-regional to field level seismic interpretation to characterize reservoir extent and geometry of deepwater depositional systems.
  • Collaborating with the team’s reservoir engineers to build high quality, fit-for-purpose, integrated static reservoir models that synthesize all available subsurface data to support field development planning and sanction decisions. Key focus areas include:
    • Conducting and supervising integrated multi-disciplinary reservoir characterization studies to improve the geological understanding of the target reservoirs and inform geomodel parameterization of reservoir models.
    • Building and maintaining an appropriate range of static models that capture key static and dynamic uncertainties and potential outcomes identified by the team.
    • Support the corporate reserves forecasting and booking processed through the creation and maintenance of SEC-compliant geomodels for STOIIP assessments.
    • Conduct and participate in subsurface Peer Reviews and internal technical reviews.
  • Seek opportunities to add value to future developments through the identification of new appraisal/development/infill opportunities, smarter depletion options, or cost reductions.
  • Effectively communicate results of subsurface assessments to Hess management and Joint Venture partners. Work with the team to identify and promote value creation opportunities and influence future development plans.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Collaborate within the Hess geomodelling community to identify and promote recommended practices across the company.
  • This is an ideal role for an experienced, innovative, and ambitious development geologist who wishes to contribute to Hess’s continued success in the world-class Guyanas Basin.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience

  • 10+ years of practical petroleum geoscience experience working for an operator across multiple value chains.
  • 5 years’ experience or more in applied geomodelling
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamworking skills are critical.  You must be able to work effectively in a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team environment.
  • A robust and pragmatic understanding of development geoscience and reservoir characterization
    • Geological and petrophysical data, its interpretation, inherent uncertainties, and preparation for geological modeling.
    • Seismic interpretation and the use and limitations of quantitative seismic data in geological model conditioning.
    • Integrating and interpreting multi-disciplinary subsurface (well log, seismic, core, pressure etc.) at multiple scales (well, field, and basin scales) to bracket key reservoir uncertainties.
    • Exposure to, and understanding of, the principles of geostatistics and ensemble based modeling approaches is an advantage. A practical understanding of basic statistics to its application to subsurface data analysis is essential.
    • Previous well planning and well operations experience.
  • The candidate will have a proven track record of:
    • Building and maintaining complex reservoir models using Petrel software. Experience combining uncertainty analyses to produce ranges of models is desirable.
    • Seismic interpretation, reservoir characterization and static modeling in deep-water clastic depositional systems.
    • Working directly with reservoir engineers to maintain and optimize robust subsurface models, calibrated to all available static and dynamic data, to support field sanction decisions.
    • Using SEC reserves certification and reporting guidelines to assess potential reserves bookings.
  • Strong presentation skills – The ability to communicate clearly and concisely in all business meetings, both internally and externally.
  • A proven ability to deliver high quality, fit for purpose, models in a timely manner.
  • An ability and willingness to mentor and developed junior staff.

Education, Training & Certifications

  • A minimum of an MSc in Geoscience or related discipline with formal training courses in various development geological disciplines.
