Summary

The Senior Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) Technician – South Gas Gathering role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities focused on the maintenance and configuration of electronic and electrical equipment essential for gas gathering operations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and configuring a variety of electronic equipment, including transmitters, control valves, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and operator interface units.
  • Conducting servicing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical equipment such as motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor control centers (MCCs), and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards while performing maintenance tasks, prioritizing the safety of both personnel and equipment.
  • Documenting all maintenance activities thoroughly to maintain accurate records and facilitate effective equipment management and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborating closely with team members, including engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel, to address complex issues and optimize equipment performance.
  • Adhering to established electrical and instrumentation standards to ensure consistency, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Overall, this role requires a strong technical background in electronics and electrical systems, proficiency in problem-solving, and excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues and address operational challenges in gas gathering operations.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

Standard Work / Abnormality Management:

  • Implementing standard work procedures and managing abnormalities to ensure operational efficiency and safety.

Preventative and Corrective Maintenance:

  • Performing maintenance on various equipment including H2S/LEL monitors, pressure/temperature/vibration/flow transmitters, level gauges, plant and compressors, Allen-Bradley PLCs, Panel views, RTU equipment, and SCADA systems.

Electrical Wiring and Repair:

  • Installing and repairing wiring, electrical fixtures, power equipment, and machinery components according to electrical code, manuals, specifications, schematics, and blueprints.

Electrical Systems Troubleshooting and Maintenance:

  • Troubleshooting and maintaining PLCs, 480V power systems, 120 control circuits, 4160 volts switchgear, transformers, motors, and electronic controls using electrical drawings and test equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing control and distribution systems, including motors, relays, switches, thermostats, and circuit-breaker panels.

Installation of Power Supply Wiring and Systems:

  • Installing and connecting power supply wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical systems for equipment in both new and existing facilities based on diagrams, schematics, or blueprints.

Work Management and Documentation:

  • Writing notifications and entering data into the Work Management System.
  • Following daily schedules generated from the Work Management System.
  • Assisting in parts inventory management for all Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) equipment.

Safety and Risk Assessment:

  • Assessing risks and developing Job Safety Analysis and Permit to Work documents before executing any job.
  • Providing input and feedback on executed jobs during the work order close-out process.

Problem Solving and Lean Practices:

  • Contributing to problem-solving activities related to equipment failures.
  • Utilizing Lean methodologies including Standard Work Instructions, Structured Problem Solving, Dashboards and Operating Rhythm, 5S, and Mistake Proofing.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Demonstrating leadership qualities aligned with Hess Corporation’s values, including the ability to influence without authority across organizational boundaries and lead a team to deliver results.

 

Experience/Skills:

  • Preferred 2-5 years of experience working in an industrial environment, specializing in the maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems.
  • Familiarity with low and medium voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in using correct hand tools for specific tasks, such as brass hammers and crescent wrenches.
  • Ability to utilize process and data meters to capture measurement points, voltage, and ohm readings, including instruments such as Fluke Meter 787, Fluke Multi-Meter 754, HART, and 438 Power Quality meters.
  • Experience with HART Interface Field Devices for mapping radar gauges and saving echo curves, utilizing devices like Emmerson 475 field communicator, Emmerson TREX, and HART interface software for PC.
  • Competence in operating and interpreting readings from instruments such as VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter), phase rotation meter, and insulation testers.
  • Skilled in proper valve and actuator installation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to locate, read, and interpret cause and effect (C&E) diagrams, standards/specifications/codes, and functional specifications/control narratives.
  • Knowledgeable about electrical concepts including voltage, current, resistance, reactance, impedance, direct current, and mechanical vs. electrical energy.
  • Familiarity with stored energy systems such as batteries, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), generators, and motors.
  • Understanding of electrical components and their application in instrumentation and control (I&C) system design, including motors, generators, transformers, capacitors, inductors, circuit breakers, electrical switchgear, motor control centers, motor-operated valves, relays, time-delay relays, and fuses.
  • Proficiency in electrical testing processes and use of testing instruments and measuring devices such as voltmeters, ammeters, multimeters, and ohmmeters.
  • Knowledge of calibration, precision, and accuracy as they relate to the design and maintenance of I&C systems.
  • Understanding of design requirements for electrical safety class and safety significant instrumentation and control systems, including independence, redundancy, diversity, and separation.
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing electrical components to ensure design requirements are met.
  • Understanding of the impact of normal and abnormal environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, moisture, high winds) on electrical components and I&C design.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics and how it impacts the performance of valves, actuators, motors, compressors, instrument air systems, dampers, HEPA filters, and pumps.

 

Education/Training  

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Proficient (limited assistance) with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word
  • Journeymen Electricians License preferred but not required (required for certain tasks)
  • Electrical or instrumentation Associate’s degree preferred
