This is an onshore Senior Land Negotiator position working within a multidisciplinary unconventional/resource development team. Advanced knowledge of onshore land activities is required, including land titles, negotiations, contracts, transactions, lease agreements, regulatory environment and joint ventures, and can coach others in these tasks. Teamwork and execution of strategy are essential. There will be functional support from a Land Manager on a land team with Land Techs, Division Order Analysts, Lease and Contract Analysts, working with an Asset Team of Engineering, Financial, Surface Land, HSE, HR, Supply Chain, and Geo professionals, with the expectation of providing leadership and direction in the development and management of their respective geographic area and of being a self-starter capable of mentoring others. 




  •  Acquire oil and gas leases, title curative, and related agreements from mineral owners
  • Engage with interest owners to resolve issues and questions and to pursue transaction opportunities
  • Draft, amend and interpret complex oil and gas leases
  • Identify need for, draft, and negotiate data trade agreements, acreage trades, confidentiality agreements, farmins/farmouts, and other agreements
  • Conduct and direct due diligence activities in support of trades, acquisitions, divestitures and related transactions
  • Read title opinions and direct title curative or other activities as needed to protect company assets
  • Manage Unit and Well inventory for asset teams and prepare drilling locations for handoff to construction and drilling
  • Advise and direct activities of other land personnel that may include land techs and contract agents working in Houston, field offices and other locations, including managing the budget and spend of those activities
  • Engage and assist on-the-ground teams with surface access issues as they arise, which will include travel to the assets
  • Identify, recommend and execute opportunities related to top-leasing, joint venture partnerships, and other external opportunities
  • Review leases and contracts to ensure contemplated activities are permissible and advise/negotiate where issues with existing agreements can be improved for the company
  • Understand current rules and proactively apply for changes to regulatory matters primarily related to field rules on well density, spacing, pooling, setbacks, reservoir definitions to facilitate development projects
  • Effectively prepare and deliver presentations to large groups, management, peers, and early career staff
  • Identify and respond to potential litigation issues and work closely with Legal department
  • Regularly prepare and submit various state and federal filings, including annual plans of development, commercial well filings, unit expansion applications, location exceptions, commingling applications, etc., and represent the company at state hearings.
  • Align with company needs to monitor and measure business activities by actively seeking ways to improve efficiency of work processes and policies.




  • Minimum of 7 years of directly relevant experience required with 10 + years preferred.  Experience with an E&P operator with direct experience in more than one state with a preference for North Dakota/Bakken operations and title experience
  • Significant direct experience is required in: title, curative, leasing, contracts and project management with an operated asset
  • Ability to comprehend operational plans, proposals and strategies, and identify problems and opportunities for negotiations
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of the land business including: title, leasing, and permitting and project management skills such as scheduling and forecasting work completion and spend
  • Advanced working knowledge of oil and gas operations, particularly onshore US unconventional development
  • Advanced land data systems experience highly desirable (e.g. QLS, ArcGIS)


Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Juris Doctorate or PLM Degree preferred
