Port Harcourt — Nigeria’s upstream oil regulator says it has launched an investigation into a gas bubbling incident in Bille Community, Rivers State, raising fresh concerns over environmental safety in the Niger Delta.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, said it has activated a coordinated technical probe to determine the source and risks associated with the gas seepage.

In a statement signed by the Chief Executive of NUPRC, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, the Commission assured residents that public safety and environmental protection remain top priorities.

“The overall well-being of our communities and the protection of the environment remain paramount,” the agency said, expressing empathy with affected residents.

According to the regulator, preliminary findings suggest the incident may be linked to a subsurface geological phenomenon, although detailed investigations are still ongoing.

“Preliminary deductions indicate that the gas bubbling may be associated with a subsurface phenomenon, detailed geotechnical and geological analyses are ongoing,” the statement noted.

The Commission said the investigation is being carried out in collaboration with industry stakeholders to ensure accurate findings and sustainable solutions.

It added that the process will identify the cause of the seepage and recommend both immediate and long-term mitigation measures in line with global industry standards.

Eyesan, reiterated the agency’s commitment to resolving the situation and safeguarding host communities.

She urged residents of the impacted area to adhere strictly to safety advisories while investigations continue.

The incident highlights ongoing environmental risks in oil-producing communities and the need for stronger monitoring and rapid response mechanisms in Nigeria’s energy sector.
