Port Harcourt — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has credited the sustained success of Nigeria LNG Limited to its public-private partnership, PPP, structure, declaring that government should limit its role to regulation while allowing private sector expertise to drive operations.
Fubara made the remarks while receiving the new Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NLNG, Adeleye Falade, at Government House in Port Harcourt, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting corporate organisations operating in the state.
“I’m very proud to say that if there is one establishment that has shown resilience… it is the NLNG,” the governor said. “And what is the reason? The reason is very simple, government has no business in business. That is the truth. Leave the business for those people who can operate it.”
NLNG, jointly owned by NNPC Limited and international partners including Shell, Total, and Eni, has operated under a PPP framework since inception, a model Fubara said has enabled it to withstand political and economic headwinds while delivering consistent value.
“Let the government play its supervisory role to ensure compliance with laws and standards, that is the reason why we still record a lot of successes in NLNG,” he added.
From a business standpoint, the governor’s comments reinforce ongoing policy debates around state participation in commercial ventures, particularly in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, where efficiency and capital discipline remain critical to attracting investment.
Fubara also pledged sustained government backing for NLNG’s operations, stressing the strategic importance of the company to both Rivers State and the national economy.
“The success of your establishment is the success of our state, and overall success of Nigeria,” he said. “Wherever you think we need to come in to support you, we will do it for you.”
In his remarks, Falade underscored the importance of stable government support in maintaining investor confidence and operational continuity.
“We deeply value the support the Rivers State Government continues to extend in fostering an enabling operating environment for businesses,” he said.
“NLNG remains deliberate in its contribution to Nigeria’s development, and Rivers State continues to be central to that commitment.”
He highlighted NLNG’s ongoing investments in host communities, including infrastructure development and economic empowerment initiatives such as the Vocational Innovation and Business Empowerment Scheme, VIBES, and MSME programmes.
