Port Harcourt — The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc, PHED, has attributed the current drop in electricity supply across its network to reduced allocation from the national grid, driven by declining gas supply to thermal power plants.
In a notice to customers, the distribution company said the shortage stems from low generation levels nationwide, which has constrained the volume of electricity available for distribution.
“The current shortage of power supply is due to the reduced allocation PHED is receiving from the national grid,” the company stated.
The DisCo further explained that the situation is linked to reduced gas supply to thermal power plants, a critical factor in Nigeria’s power generation mix.
“This decline is as a result of low power generation caused by a reduction in the gas supply… and has consequently impacted the distribution of power within our network,” PHED added.
The development highlights the continued vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity sector to gas supply disruptions, underscoring the importance of stable feedstock for thermal generation, which accounts for the bulk of grid power.
PHED apologised for the disruption and assured customers of efforts to optimise available supply.
“We assure you of our commitment to efficiently distribute the available power while we anticipate improved allocation from the grid,” the company said.
The situation reinforces ongoing concerns around gas-to-power infrastructure reliability, a key constraint to achieving consistent electricity supply in Nigeria.
