Job Description:
Our client is seeking a qualified Legal Counsel to support its Group Legal function, with primary responsibility for legal matters relating to its Mozambique operations. The role will cover commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, employment and labour law, and litigation/dispute resolution. Responsibilities include drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, maintaining legal processes and records, and supporting licensing, permits and regulatory filings.
The successful candidate will oversee the Company Secretary function, including board governance, statutory filings, corporate registers and records. The role will provide employment-law support to HR and management, including employment contracts, policies and disciplinary frameworks.
The incumbent will monitor Mozambican legislative developments, manage compliance requirements and liaise with external legal counsel where required.
Responsibilities:
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial, operational, lease, NDA and other legal agreements.
- Develop and maintain standardized contract templates, legal processes and effective contract management systems.
- Monitor Mozambican legislation and ensure ongoing corporate, employment, commercial and regulatory compliance.
- Manage licensing, permits, regulatory filings, KYC reviews and compliance training across relevant departments.
- Oversee the Company Secretary function, including board meetings, minutes, statutory filings, registers and corporate records.
- Provide legal advice and support on employment and labour matters, including contracts, HR policies and disciplinary frameworks.
- Manage disputes, litigation and potential legal claims, including instructing and liaising with external Mozambican legal counsel.
- Maintain effective legal file management and collaborate with the wider Group Legal team to standardize and improve legal operations.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Law Degree.
- Admission to the relevant legal body or Bar Association in Mozambique
- Minimum 5 years’ post-qualification experience as a lawyer in Mozambique.
- Experience across commercial contracts, employment/labour law, regulatory compliance and corporate governance would be advantageous.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong knowledge of Mozambican legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong commercial, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with senior legal colleagues and key stakeholders.
