Description

As a Government Relations Advisor focused on the oil and gas sector, you will play a pivotal role in analyzing and communicating political and policy issues, shaping interactions with governmental entities at all levels. Your responsibilities will include informing efforts to advocate for the company’s interests, navigating regulatory landscapes, and building strategic partnerships to support our business objectives. You will work closely with internal stakeholders to assess policy impacts and to develop and implement strategies that align with the company’s objectives while navigating the complex landscape of governmental affairs.

This position demands strong political and energy policy acumen, along with skills in policy analysis, writing, critical thinking, facilitation, communication, and strategic planning. A deep understanding of energy, government, and policy dynamics is essential. A proven track record in public policy and engagement with governments is a must. Direct experience in the oil and gas industry and working with the Alberta, British Columbia, and/or federal government on energy issues is preferred.

This position will require occasional travel and flexibility in work hours to accommodate priority issue management.

Responsibilities

  • Government Engagement: Support the development and implementation of comprehensive government affairs strategies aligned with business goals and objectives. Leverage political acumen and an understanding of the policy landscape in Canada, as well as legislative and regulatory processes, to inform the development and execution of government relations strategies. Support and inform efforts to identify and build relationships with key government officials, agencies, and stakeholders at the local, provincial, and federal levels.
  • Political and Policy Analysis and Advocacy: Stay informed about and communicate political, policy, legislative, and regulatory developments at the local, provincial, and federal levels that may impact operations. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to analyze proposed policies and assess their potential impact on the company to support policy issue management and risk evaluation. Develop briefing notes to build internal awareness about policy issues and impact. Support advocacy for workable policies and regulations through effective engagement with policymakers, industry associations, and advocacy groups, including leading the coordination and development of government submissions on priority policy issues.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Track relevant political, policy, legislative and regulatory developments, associated media coverage, as well as political events and trends. Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on key opportunities, issues, and developments that may affect the company.
  • Communication and Advocacy Materials: Develop and disseminate advocacy materials, including briefing documents, government submissions, position papers, and talking points, to support government relations objectives. Collaborate with internal teams to communicate our policy positions effectively to external stakeholders and the public.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Utilize knowledge of key stakeholders to create a stakeholder map and make recommendations for membership and sponsorship. Support, cultivate, and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including government, trade associations, community organizations, and industry partners. Represent the company in meetings and industry forums to advance our interests and address policy challenges as needed.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive government affairs strategies and formulate company policy positions in alignment with the company’s overall goals and objectives. Provide insights and recommendations based on your understanding of political and policy landscapes to support strategy development. Utilize your planning, writing, and presentation development skills to support the creation of associated planning and communication materials.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, business, or a related field (advanced degree preferred), plus at least seven years of experience in government relations, public affairs, or a related role within the oil and gas industry.
  • Strong political and policy acumen with an understanding of energy issue dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and principles, demonstrated by a track record of influencing policy outcomes.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop innovative policy solutions that balance environmental, economic, and social objectives.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to summarize and articulate complex issues and ideas clearly, accurately, and persuasively in written and verbal formats.
  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • A team player, with strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Commitment to integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all aspects of the job.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
