Process Safety Engineer 

12-Month Contract (Norwich)

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Process Safety Engineer role in our UK subsidiary, one of the prominent gas operators in the Southern North Sea. This position, crucial to our QSHE team, requires specialized expertise in process safety engineering. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring compliance with UK QSHE legislation, codes of practice, guidelines, industry standards, and best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth process safety studies supporting operations and projects, including:

    • Chairing safety studies like Total Risk Management, HAZID, Bowtie, ALARP.
    • Developing Barrier Diagrams (Bowties).
    • Consequence modeling using DNV GL PHAST or FLARESIM software.
    • Mini Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA) and Event/Fault Tree development.
    • Hazardous Area Classification.
    • Fire and Explosion Risk Assessment.
    • Preparation of Safety Case Material Changes.
    • Conducting 5-yearly Thorough Reviews.
    • Knowledge in COMAH regulations (desirable).
    • Knowledge in Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling (desirable).
  • Prepare, commission, manage, and review process safety studies from contractors, including:

    • QRA and Cost Benefit Analysis.
    • Escape, Evacuation and Rescue Assessment.
    • Probabilistic Explosion Assessment.
    • Safety Critical System Impairment Assessment.
    • Occupied Building Risk Assessment (Good knowledge of HAZOP, SIL, and LOPA is desirable).
  • Provide process safety engineering support for the Management of Change process (MOC) and identify appropriate safety studies.

  • Engage with operations and projects to ensure regulatory requirements for process safety are met, permits obtained, and conditions complied with.

  • Offer coaching, guidance, and advice specifically related to process safety to ensure compliance with applicable legislation such as OSDR/SCR, PFEER, DSEAR, DCR, PSR, and PSSR.

  • Liaise with regulatory bodies on process safety matters, understanding regulatory drivers, and providing compliance guidance.

  • Stay current with changes in process safety legislations, codes, guidelines, and industry standards.

  • Support Safety Case Regulations (SCR) requirements related to process safety, including maintenance of documentation and input to periodic reviews.

  • Identify opportunities to improve overall process safety standards and performance.

  • Process Safety Engineer.

Safety & Environmentally Critical Courses:

  • FLARESIM (Flare Modelling).
  • Health & Safety Compliance (including SECE) CBT.
  • PHA-Pro End User.
  • Phast Advanced Discharge Modelling.
  • Phast Advanced Dispersion and Toxic Modelling.
  • Phast Advanced Flammable Modelling.
  • Phast Software Introduction.
  • Risk Management – Bowtie Method.
  • Hazardous Area Classification.

Key Requirements:

    • Higher technical qualification in an engineering field (e.g., Process Safety, Chemical, or Mechanical).
    • Chartered in chemical/process engineering (desirable).
    • 10+ years of experience specifically in Process Safety Engineering.
    • Software knowledge: MS Office (Word/Excel mandatory), PHAST, PHA-Pro, BowTie XP, FLARESIM.
    • Ability to prepare technical reports and letters, work to deadlines, and demonstrate organization and a methodical approach.
    • Ability to interact with Senior Management and regulatory bodies.
    • Technical confidence in process safety principles and practices.
